As we all know, life needs upgrading every now and then and windows are no exception to this. Installing new windows will not only add value to your home, but it can save on energy costs and lower your carbon footprint all together. Here are some signs you should look for in order to know when to get new windows.

Do your windows have a ‘fog’ on them?

This fog is caused by a broken seal on your window. The fog is created by argon gas escaping from the window and mixing with the outside air. It is located in-between the window panes, meaning, no matter how many times you try to get the window clean, the fog and condensation will stay.

Is opening/closing your windows an arm-workout (…and not in a good way)?

Properly functioning windows shouldn’t require much effort to open and close them. In some cases, a mechanism is able to be replaced, not the entire window. But more often than not a larger window was forced into a smaller opening. This means that no matter how many times you try to oil up your crank out, it will always be tough to open and close it.

Are the noises from outside becoming louder each year?

A properly installed window is meant to drown out the noises from outside the home. This feature in windows is a high priority if you live near high traffic areas. The reason for the excessive noise can be from seals on the window wearing out or the foam and caulk around the window is starting to fail. If it is just the foam and caulk weathering or wearing down due to age, a fix can be as simple as a handy man swinging by.

Is the carpet or furniture near the window fading in color?

Most older windows (20 years or older) provide poor UV protection. This can cause furniture and carpeting inside the home to fade. To provide extra UV protection inside your home, you can add a lamination to the window or get a new tinted window. Additionally, newer windows, in general, will provide more UV protection.

Has there been an excessive amount of condensation on your windows?

The cause for a higher amount of condensation to form on windows is either due to a broken seal or structural issues in the frame. Condensation forms when moist air condenses onto a cold surface. Installing new windows in a home will allow less moist air to escape. Monitoring the humidity levels in your home in different rooms or the temperature is another great way to see if a window in a specific room needs to be replaced.
